What’s it like being a baby sleep consultant?

by | Aug 27, 2019 | Blog

We all know that life coaches play a role, but not many people understand just how beneficial being a sleep consultant can be. In this day and age, it’s now even more rewarding than ever to know that your actions have made a positive impact on someone’s life, especially when it has helped improve their quality of life.

For nearly 10 years, I’ve been a child sleep consultant and trainer, and I’ve watched as so many parents have gone from sleep-deprived to rested, refreshed and above all else, healthy. That’s why I wanted to shed some light on what it’s actually like being a baby sleep consultant.

What is a baby sleep consultant?

A baby sleep consultant is someone that guides, supports and mentors parents in how to help their child fall asleep without any help or assistance from the parent. They’ve experienced first-hand how a little extra support can make a difference, and want to share their passion and guidance with families across the country.

Each of the consultants certified by Baby Sleep the Night™ has their own unique strengths, and many of them have had children start school and have found themselves wondering what to do during their spare time. They want to be available for their kids, but they also want to support their family financially.

They need flexible working hours and understand that being part of a booming industry is one way to bring in some income, as well as spending quality time with their kids while doing something incredibly rewarding too.

What does a baby sleep consultant do?

As I’ve already mentioned, a baby sleep consultant guides new parents and helps instil a routine that helps children sleep unaided.

For example, a Baby Sleep the Night™- certified consultant will have an in-depth meeting with the parent, either in person or via Skype/FaceTime/phonecall to understand every aspect of the baby’s sleeping habits, and get to the bottom of why they’re not sleeping for as long as they should.

They then work closely with the parents to create a sleeping plan that’s perfectly tailored to their child and your circumstances. They answer questions, establish routines and help sleep-deprived parents understand that they’re not alone.

What are the benefits of being a baby sleep consultant?

As well as helping other parents during those early weeks and months, baby sleep consultants also benefit from:

  • Flexible working, with self-set schedules that work around their own children and daily routines
  • The ability to run their own business from home, without having to compromise on family-time
  • Understanding that their own experiences can help improve the lives of others
  • Doing a job that is as rewarding on the first day as it is at the end of the first year, and beyond
  • Being part of one of the largest certified consultant teams in the country, forming lasting professional relationships

What do Baby Sleep the Night™-certified consultants have to say?

Maria Murphy said: “Now that I am a fully qualified and certified Baby Sleep the Night™ sleep consultant, it is the most fulfilling career move I’ve made.

To hear feedback from families that have sleep challenges with their children say ‘you have changed our life’ is such a ‘pinch me’ moment that just doesn’t happen in all careers…but it happens to me now!  It is my passion to help as many families as I can by giving them the knowledge they need to help their children sleep better.

It’s the most amazing and rewarding feeling that I am so lucky to receive and will never get tired of.  It also provides me with the flexibility to work when I can around my family and meet so many new lovely people.”

Kelly Dawson explained: “Since qualifying in May 2018 I have been busy with 2-6 clients per month. I have found that you do need to be proactive as with any new business and it’s been amazing but not surprising how well social media works. I can post a question along with an answer, and, that week, have a few enquiries.

It’s been great. It’s hard work and I do work at every opportunity I can – early morning, day and in the evening, but it’s worth it.

I have currently run 3 workshops and now venturing further afield, I have been asked to hold Adult Sleep Workshops and will be holding toddler sessions once a month at a community centre catered for local families – the opportunity is huge but you do need to make your own opportunities.”

Why did I start this journey?

Like many of you, the first time I found out about sleep consultancy was during my desperate middle-of-the-night Googling over a decade ago. My daughter wasn’t sleeping, neither was I, and I needed help.

Within four nights of professional help, she was sleeping a full 12 hours, and my passion for sleep consultancy began. I wanted to help other parents feel the relief I felt, so I started offering help to friends and family, based on what I’d already experienced.

Skip forward to today, and I’m helping other mums become baby sleep consultants too. I love seeing them blossom into their own business entities, and love hearing their success stories throughout the year.
